Lawmakers Dennis Lam Shun-chiu and Louis Loong Hon-biu have joined a wave of politicians opting not to run for election, while Hong Kong’s legislature has broken from tradition by cancelling an end-of-term banquet with the city’s leader and other officials.
Authorities also said on Wednesday that the government would hold a high-level seminar on the coming Legislative Council election and executive-legislative relationship on Thursday, with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu to speak at the event.
Other speakers at the seminar, titled “Executive-Legislative Collaboration for Good Governance and a Better Future”, include Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki and Legco president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen.
The event is being held a week before the election nominations open on October 24.
Wednesday saw legislators Lam, 65, and Loong, 74, announce they would not seek another term at Legco.
Loong is the eighth lawmaker aged 70 or above who decided against running in the coming election, fuelling speculation that a Beijing-favoured age limit is being imposed.
