Usually safe Taiwan was rocked on Friday evening after an attacker exploded smoke bombs in the subway, stabbed several people, including at least three to death, and injured several others before killing himself when he jumped off a building in an apparent effort to escape, according to news reports.
Police are investigating the motive.
According to news agencies, the suspect, identified as a 27-year-old man named Cheng Wen, attacked Taipei residents in the metro subway system indiscriminately, according to the island’s official news agency and city government.
Police said Chang was declared dead at a hospital, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.

The suspect reportedly threw a smoke grenade near an underground exit of the Taipei Main subway station, sending panicked pedestrians fleeing, local media reported.
After that, he headed to a popular shopping district where he stabbed several people on the first and fourth floors of the Eslite department store, mostly on the neck, the news agency said, citing police sources. He was then reportedly killed after jumping from the building’s sixth floor.
