Peshawar, Pakistan – At least 307 people have lost their lives in the past 48 hours as torrential rains and a cloudburst triggered flash floods across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to an initial situation report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The breakdown of casualties reveals severe devastation in several districts: Buner reported 184 deaths, followed by Shangla with 36, Mansehra 23, Swat 22, Bajaur 21, Battagram 15, and Dir 5 fatalities.
The PDMA confirmed that the deceased included 279 men, 15 women, and 13 children, while 23 others were injured (17 men, 4 women, 2 children). The floods also damaged 74 houses—63 partially and 11 completely destroyed.
Buner district remains the hardest hit, accounting for nearly 60% of the total fatalities. Authorities reported that the flash floods and rain-related incidents particularly devastated Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram districts.
Meteorological officials have warned that the current spell of heavy monsoon rains is expected to continue intermittently until August 21, raising fears of further destruction.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has released emergency funds for the worst-affected districts and directed all relevant departments to accelerate relief and rescue operations. PDMA stated that rescue teams and local administrations remain in close coordination while continuous monitoring of the situation is underway.
