Hong Kong transport authorities will use artificial intelligence to assess the fitness of elderly professional drivers in a trial run set to start later this year, aiming to enhance the reliability of tests for older motorists.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan told the Legislative Council on Wednesday that the medical assessment trial would be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, with industry members and doctors set to gather feedback.
“We will invite members of the commercial vehicle industry to participate in the medical assessment trials ahead of schedule during the fourth quarter of this year,” she said.
Chan also said that the improved assessment was expected to be launched in the second quarter of the following year.
“As regards the reaction test, we will explore the utilisation of innovative technology and artificial intelligence, including drawing on the experiences in technological innovation across different regions,” she added.
Chan noted that this would help assess drivers’ physical responsiveness by simulating various road situations and driving conditions to test their reactions under different circumstances.
