About 6,000 residents in Hong Kong’s Quarry Bay neighbourhood were to be evacuated by 11pm on Friday after a 1,000lb (454kg) wartime bomb described as “highly dangerous” was found at a construction site.
Chief Superintendent Andy Chan Tin-chu of Eastern police district said specialists would begin disposal of the bomb, which was found at a site on Pan Hoi Street, at 2am on Saturday after making sure all residents had left the area. Eighteen buildings were being evacuated.
Rail giant the MTR Corporation said it would evacuate staff from Quarry Bay station before 2am, and warned of significant disruptions to train services on the Island and Tseung Kwan O lines on Saturday morning. It said it would announce arrangements before the first train departed.
Chan said the bomb disposal team hoped to get rid of the ordnance within 12 hours so residents could resume life as normal during the daytime.
“This bomb still functions very well, and it is highly dangerous, so we hope to evacuate all the affected residents first before starting the disposal procedures,” he said.
Chan said that experts from police’s explosive ordnance disposal bureau had confirmed the object was an aerial bomb that had been left over from World War II.
