Spider-Man: Brand New Day Swings Into CinemaCon With New Scene, Posters
Four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home became the biggest film in Sony history, Tom Holland‘s webslinger was back as part of the studio’s CinemaCon presentation. Sony introduced a scene from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Wonder Man co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Marvel‘s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings….
Four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home became the biggest film in Sony history, Tom Holland‘s webslinger was back as part of the studio’s CinemaCon presentation.
Sony introduced a scene from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Wonder Man co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Marvel‘s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Sony head Tom Rothman first showed off two upcoming posters for the movie, noting it’s “feels like nothing we’ve ever made” despite the many past stories around the superhero. He also called it Holland’s “finest performance,” before Holland appeared virtually to declare the movie is “the most emotional Spider-Man movie we’ve ever made, and in some ways, the most grown up.”

He introduced the clip, which shows Peter Parker living in the post-No Way Home world where his closest friends no longer know who he is. Peter is grabbing a bite at a bodega when Jacob Batalon’s Ned walks in to grab alcohol, and as expected, doesn’t recognize his longtime friend. Peter decides to follow him home and crash a house party that Ned and MJ (Zendaya) are throwing.
Peter discovers that Ned has a wall of Spider-Man photos and news clippings in his room and has created “Spider-Tracker,” which monitors the hero’s whereabouts — and claims he’s narrowed Spider-Man’s identity down to two prime subjects (which spoiler alert, aren’t Peter). MJ then appears, as Peter gives her the flowers he brought asa host gift — and in a nervous moment introduces himself as “Maynard.”
MJ tells Ned she got a job but turned down, not wanting to work at a “soulless corporation,” with a plan to “wait for something great.” MJ is also dating someone else, and as she leans in to kiss him, Peter emotionally flees the scene.
Brand New Day is crucial to Sony’s slate and is expected to be one of the top films of the summer. Its trailer recently set an all-time 24–hour record with 718 million views, while the previous installment topped nearly $2 billion at the box office, a remarkable sum given that the pandemic was still a concern.
Brand New Day also stars Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and Sadie Sink in a mystery role. It picks up on the ending of No Way Home, in which the world was forced to forget Peter Parker, including his closest friends, in order to prevent the destruction of his world.
The film is made in conjunction with Disney’s Marvel Studios, and has a script from No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Brand New Day arrives on July 31.
