Reservoir Media has closed a deal to acquire Miles Davis’s publishing catalog, the company announced on Tuesday, giving Reservoir ownership over one of the most iconic catalogs in the history of jazz music.
Reservoir didn’t disclose how much it paid for the catalog but confirmed that with the acquisition, the company is joining Davis’s estate, which is overseen by the late musician’s children, Cheryl and Erin Davis, his nephew, Vincent Wilburn Jr., as well as by general manager Darryl Porter and Attorney Jeff Biederman.
“Miles Davis is one of the most influential musicians of all time, and it is an incredible honor that his catalog has found a home atReservoir,” Reservoir founder and CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the entire Miles Davis Estate — Cheryl, Erin, Vince, Darryl and Jeff — for entrusting us with this responsibility. This moment is also a recognition ofReservoir’s proven commitment and capability to preserve legacies and reignite discovery of legendary artists on modern platforms, like streaming and social media. As we head into his centennial year, we look forward to showcasing Miles’ brilliance to new audiences, ensuring his music continues to be heard and celebrated worldwide.”
Davis is regard as one of the greatest and most influential jazz trumpeters of all time, known for albums, such as Bitches Brew and Kind of Blue. The latter is known as one of the greatest albums of all time and is certified five-times platinum by the RIAA.
“We are so pleased to begin this new chapter of Miles’ legacy — we are looking forward to working with Golnar, David, and the entire team atReservoir,” Erin Davis said in a statement.
As Wilburn Jr. said: “WithReservoir, there’s a real respect for Miles — his music, his style and his cultural impact. That means a lot to us. This partnership gives us the chance to elevate his legacy in new ways, and to ensure that his influence continues to inspire.”
The deal is the latest in a still-hot music acquisition market across the music business. As THR exclusively reported last week, Sony Music closed a deal to acquire a stake in Jack White’s catalog earlier this summer. Chord Music Partners, bought a stake in Morgan Wallen’s catalog from record label Big Loud earlier this year. Warner Music Group, meanwhile, announced a new $1.2 billion joint venture with Bain Capital back in July to target more music acquisitions.
Davis’s estate is already planning around the musician’s centennial next year, with several projects in the works, including the feature film Miles & Juliette, a recounting of Davis’s affair with Juliette Greco, which the estate developed with River Road Entertainment and Mick Jagger’s Jagged Films.
“With an unrelenting commitment to innovation and exploration, Miles Davis has served as a blueprint for musicians and creatives of all kinds for decades,” Reservoir vice president of A&R and marketing David Hoffman said in a statement. “His music is elemental to me, and it is a dream come true to be working with his estate to share that passion with the world. TheReservoirteam is proud to champion Miles’ incredible body of work, while honoring the essence and vision of a once-in-a-lifetime artist.”
