Peshawar (International Desk) — Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed surprise over the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s decision to back away from supporting the 26th Constitutional Amendment, saying he “cannot understand why PTI friends have suddenly withdrawn.”
Speaking to the media in Peshawar, Fazlur Rehman said the PTI’s mandate in the federal government, as well as JUI-F’s mandate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, had been “stolen.” He claimed that the current government is in the minority and questioned the legitimacy of those in power.
The JUI-F chief stated that the 26th Amendment, comprising 27 pages, had been appreciated by the Senate, National Assembly, and the government, yet PTI’s retreat from the initiative “raises questions.” He said PTI was now claiming to stand in solidarity with judges, which had been used to cast doubts on the amendment.
Fazlur Rehman added that his party was open to dialogue with PTI if invited, and regarding the change in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s chief minister, he said the JUI-F would take its decision based on the evolving situation in the provincial assembly.
He welcomed PTI’s acknowledgment of growing law and order concerns in the province, calling it “a positive realization.”
