WASHINGTON: The United States has halted all immigration applications from citizens of 19 countries, affecting green card and citizenship requests.
According to U.S. media, the affected countries include Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, Turkmenistan, Yemen, and several others.
The New York Times reported that the freeze applies to nationals of countries previously targeted by the Trump administration, which in June had restricted the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) from granting certain immigration statuses.
USCIS confirmed that all final decisions—approvals or denials—on pending cases from these countries have been suspended, including applications from individuals who were close to obtaining U.S. citizenship.
The move raises concerns among immigrants and advocacy groups, who warn that thousands of long-pending applications may face indefinite delays.
