India has contacted Pakistan for the second time in 24 hours to share advance information regarding expected flooding in the Sutlej River.
According to diplomatic sources, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad reached out to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with details about the flood situation in the Sutlej. Sources confirmed that India has also shared flood-related data with Pakistan in the past.
Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that on 24 August, India conveyed flood warnings through diplomatic channels instead of the Indus Waters Commission. Pakistan reiterated that India is bound to fully comply with all provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty.
The spokesperson further said that India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty constitutes a grave violation of international law, adding that India’s unilateral actions could seriously undermine peace and stability in the region.
It is noteworthy that last night India also contacted Pakistan to alert about possible major flooding in the Tawi River at Jammu. Diplomatic sources noted that this was the first significant contact since the Pakistan–India war in May.
In May, India had unilaterally announced the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty following the conflict, a decision rejected by both Pakistan and the International Court of Arbitration.
