Bangladesh: Mob Exhumes and Burns Body of Controversial Religious Figure

Dhaka: A shocking incident unfolded in central Bangladesh’s Rajbari district, where an enraged mob exhumed the body of a controversial religious figure and set it on fire in public.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Mullah Nurul Haq—locally known as “Nura Pagal” for claiming to be the Mahdi—was forcibly removed from his grave, wrapped in his burial shroud, and later set ablaze. Reports suggest parts of the body were mutilated before being burned.

Authorities confirmed that at least one person was killed in the violence linked to the incident. Police have launched an investigation to identify those involved and vowed to bring them to justice.

Media reports note that Bangladesh has witnessed attacks on religious sites in the past, but Friday’s incident has been described as particularly disturbing and unprecedented in a Muslim-majority society.
