Islamabad – (M.Saleem )
A massive data leak has surfaced online, exposing sensitive information of thousands of Pakistanis, including federal ministers, senior government officials, and ordinary citizens.
According to Express News, the leaked data being sold on the internet includes SIM ownership details, home addresses, call records, copies of national identity cards, and even travel history. Shockingly, the personal data of high-profile individuals — from the Interior Minister to PTA spokespersons — is openly available on the web.
The report reveals that dozens of websites are offering this information for sale at extremely low prices: mobile location data for PKR 500, call records for PKR 2,000, and international travel details for PKR 5,000. Criminals can easily purchase this information and misuse it to blackmail or entrap citizens.
This is not the first time the issue has been raised. A year ago, on October 12, a private TV channel highlighted the same problem, but despite assurances by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) that such sites had been blocked, the illegal sale of data continues.
The silence of key institutions, including PTA and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority (NCCIA), has raised serious concerns. Citizens are questioning: How is this data being leaked? Who is responsible for its continuous sale? And why has no action been taken despite repeated warnings?
