Addis Ababa,Ethiopia is preparing to inaugurate what it claims will be the world’s largest dam, built on the River Nile, a project with far-reaching implications for the region.
According to Ethiopian officials, the dam has the capacity to store more water than China’s Three Gorges Dam, currently the largest in the world. Citizens were reported to have contributed funding from their own pockets to support the multibillion-dollar megaproject, which Addis Ababa hails as a symbol of national pride and self-reliance.
However, the development has raised alarm in Egypt, where authorities fear the dam could drastically reduce Nile water flows, threatening agriculture and water security. The Nile provides nearly all of Egypt’s fresh water, and officials in Cairo have long warned that any reduction would have catastrophic consequences.
Regional analysts say the inauguration could escalate long-standing disputes between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan, as the countries have failed to reach a comprehensive agreement on water sharing despite years of negotiations.
