Islamabad, The federal government of Pakistan has announced plans to replace traditional three-phase electricity meters across the country with modern Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters in a phased program.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the decision is aimed at curbing electricity theft, preventing overbilling, and improving transparency in the power distribution system.
A ministry spokesperson said the new smart meters will not only ensure accurate billing but also help reduce line losses. Consumers will be able to track their electricity usage in real time, enabling better monitoring and energy efficiency.
The replacement project will begin in major urban centers before gradually expanding to rural areas. Officials emphasized that the initiative is part of broader reforms to strengthen Pakistan’s power sector and address long-standing challenges in electricity distribution.
