COMSATS Executive Director Meets Ghanaian President, Discusses Science, Technology, and Climate Cooperation

Accra, Ghana – Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Nafees Zakaria, Executive Director of the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), called on Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, the incumbent Chairperson of COMSATS, at the Jubilee House in Accra. Dr. Zakaria is leading a four-member delegation of the COMSATS Secretariat on his visit to Ghana.
The meeting was attended by Ghana’s Minister of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah; Chief Director of MEST, Madam Suweibatu Adam; and Director General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Prof. Paul Pinnock Bosu.
Ambassador Zakaria paid tribute to Ghana’s pioneering role as a founding member of COMSATS and lauded its strong leadership since assuming the Chair in 2012. He briefed the President on COMSATS’ initiatives, including the establishment of an ISO-certified Nanotechnology Lab, development of indigenous electric vehicle technology, promotion of collaborative R&D, postgraduate scholarships, and capacity-building programs. He also highlighted opportunities for cooperation in environmental management, higher education, transport, energy, genomic sequencing, and telehealth solutions.
The discussions also covered preparations for the upcoming COMSATS General Meeting at the summit level in Ghana, expansion of the Commission’s membership, enhanced focus on environmental issues, and resource mobilization for science and technology initiatives.
President Mahama praised COMSATS as an important intergovernmental organization supporting sustainable development across the Global South. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to advancing COMSATS’ objectives and assured full support from his office in strengthening collaboration among its 27 Member States.
Separately, Dr. Zakaria held productive meetings with senior officials of MEST and CSIR, resulting in multiple tangible outcomes aligned with Ghana’s development priorities.
