Islamabad,(International Desk) — Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled a large-scale relief package for victims of the recent floods that have devastated several regions of the country, killing scores of people and leaving thousands displaced.
In a televised address, Sharif said the government would waive electricity bills for all households in flood-affected areas for the month of August. Consumers who have already paid their bills will receive compensation in their next billing cycle. The federal government will cover the cost of these waivers from its own resources.
The Prime Minister noted that the floods had not only claimed lives but also destroyed homes, livestock, crops, and infrastructure, causing severe economic hardship. He announced that commercial, agricultural, and industrial power consumers in affected regions would also see their August bills deferred, with further relief to be considered once damage assessments are complete.
Sharif emphasized that relief efforts were being carried out jointly by federal and provincial governments, the military, and humanitarian organizations, with food supplies, medical assistance, and temporary shelters being provided to the displaced population.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to full rehabilitation, declaring: “We will not rest until every flood-affected family is resettled in their homes.”
The floods come as Pakistan continues to grapple with the impact of climate change, which has made extreme weather events more frequent and destructive. International aid agencies are expected to assess the situation in coordination with Islamabad in the coming days.
