Islamabad: Federal Secretary for IT and Telecommunications, Zarar Hashim, has confirmed that internet disruptions in Pakistan are linked to damaged submarine cables near Yemen, with full restoration expected to take another four to five weeks.
During a briefing to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT, Member Sadiq Ali Memon raised concerns over internet speed, questioning why disruptions persist despite reports of new cables being laid.
Hashim explained that the security situation near Yemen has complicated repair operations, with four to five submarine cables cut in the region, including two directly affecting Pakistan.
He added that service providers have shifted bandwidth to alternative routes to mitigate the impact, but users may continue to experience slower internet until the damaged cables are restored.
