Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Saturday inaugurated the balloting ceremony for the second phase of the Punjab Green Tractor Program, aimed at supporting small and medium farmers across the province.
During the draw, the first tractor was allotted to Raja Riffat Abbas from Attock Tehsil, followed by Nuzhat Parveen and Mian Naseer. CM Maryam personally congratulated the winners and even called farmer Muhammad Ashiq on the phone, speaking in Punjabi to inform him that his name had been selected.
Briefing the CM, the Agriculture Secretary said that landowners with seven acres or more are eligible for tractors ranging from 75 to 125 horsepower, with the Punjab government offering a subsidy of Rs. 1 million for high-powered tractors. In total, subsidies will be provided for 20,000 tractors under the program—9,500 high-powered and 10,000 medium-powered.
According to officials, 734,000 farmers applied for Phase II of the scheme, of which 282,000 were declared eligible and 9,500 were successful in the ballot. Notably, 98% of farmers applied for locally manufactured tractors, while 2% opted for imported modern models. Following this demand, foreign tractor dealers have begun setting up offices and dealerships in Punjab.
