Karachi,Pakistan’s largest private power utility, K-Electric, has announced the permanent shutdown of two of its gas-fired power plants in Karachi, citing the unavailability of local gas and the failure of imported LNG as a reliable alternative.
In a notice sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, the company confirmed that the Korangi Town Gas Turbine Power Station and the SITE Gas Turbine Power Station would be decommissioned. The decision was formally approved by K-Electric’s Board of Directors, and the utility will now seek regulatory clearance from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
K-Electric assured that the closure of the two stations will not disrupt electricity supply in Karachi. To meet demand, the company said it has already operationalized the 900 MW Bin Qasim Power Plant.
The move highlights the growing challenges in Pakistan’s energy sector, where dependence on imported fuel has proven costly and unreliable amid global price fluctuations.
