Islamabad — A local court in Islamabad has formally framed charges against lawyer and human rights activist Imaan Mazari, daughter of former federal minister Shireen Mazari, and her husband in a case linked to a controversial tweet.
Prosecutors argued that the couple’s statements on social media undermined the reputation of state institutions. The indictment was read out in court on Tuesday, with both defendants pleading not guilty and denying any wrongdoing.
Defense lawyers claimed the case was politically motivated and aimed at curbing freedom of expression. The court adjourned proceedings after summoning prosecution witnesses for the next hearing.
The case stems from a tweet by Mazari that authorities deemed objectionable. Rights groups have criticized the prosecution, calling it an attack on free speech, while government representatives maintain that no one is above the law.
