Wellington: New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from T20 International cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career in the shortest format of the game.
Williamson, who led the Black Caps in multiple ICC tournaments, said the decision was made to focus on Test and ODI cricket and to manage his workload ahead of upcoming international commitments.
The 34-year-old has been one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers across all formats, scoring over 2,400 runs in T20 internationals since his debut in 2011.
Under his leadership, New Zealand reached the final of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup and the semi-finals in 2016 and 2022, establishing the team as one of the most competitive sides in global T20 cricket.
Williamson expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans, saying he looks forward to continuing to represent New Zealand in the longer formats.
