DUBAI: Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage suffered a personal tragedy as his father passed away from a heart attack while the player was in Dubai for the ongoing Asia Cup T20 2025.
According to media reports, the cricketer was informed of his father’s death by the team manager shortly after Sri Lanka’s match against Afghanistan. The team management and fellow players expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with Wellalage during this difficult time.
In the match, Wellalage bowled four overs, conceding 49 runs and taking one wicket. However, he endured a tough spell when Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi struck him for five consecutive sixes in his final over. Despite this, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by six wickets in the tournament’s 11th match, securing their place in the Super Four stage.
