WASHINGTON— U.S. President Donald Trump has said that ending the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan would be “very easy” for him, expressing his willingness to help both nations achieve peace.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump remarked, “I like stopping wars. I’m aware of the recent border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and ending this conflict would be very easy for me.”
During the same interaction, President Trump once again referred to his role in reducing tensions between Pakistan and India, claiming that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told him he had saved “millions of lives” by helping to end hostilities between the two nuclear neighbors.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan flared recently after Pakistan launched targeted strikes on militant hideouts inside Afghanistan, resulting in several casualties. Following appeals from the Afghan Taliban, both sides agreed to a temporary 48-hour ceasefire starting at 6 p.m.
According to British media reports, Pakistan and Afghanistan have now agreed to extend the ceasefire until peace talks being held in Doha are concluded.
