After a five-year hiatus, direct air connectivity between Pakistan and the United Kingdom has been restored.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to resume its first direct flight from Islamabad to Manchester today (Saturday), marking a significant milestone for the national carrier.
The resumption follows the lifting of a safety-related ban imposed in July 2020 by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
PIA officials have hailed the development as a major relief for thousands of passengers, noting that it will not only make travel between the two countries more convenient but also strengthen familial, trade, and cultural ties.
A PIA spokesperson described the occasion as “a historic moment reflecting our unwavering commitment to aviation safety.” The spokesperson added that the restoration of flights will enhance economic and cultural relations between Pakistan and the UK and provide greater convenience for the Pakistani community.
Manchester Airport authorities also welcomed the decision, saying it would benefit the large Pakistani diaspora and business community by restoring a vital direct link.
During the suspension, Pakistani travelers were forced to rely on connecting flights through other airlines, resulting in longer journeys.
PIA announced that multiple direct flights per week will initially operate between Islamabad and Manchester, with plans to expand services to other UK destinations in the future.
