KARACHI: In a surprising turn of events, the distribution box installed for Safe City surveillance cameras near Bilawal House has been stolen.
Director General of the Safe City Project, Asif Ijaz Sheikh, confirmed the incident, stating that following the theft of the distribution box, the cameras were taken down from their poles.
According to Sheikh, the DB box connected to the Safe City cameras at Bilawal House Chowrangi was stolen, causing the cameras to go offline. “The distribution box contained equipment worth hundreds of thousands of rupees,” he said, adding that officials are investigating why the alarm did not go off during the theft.
The theft comes at a time when Karachi’s Safe City initiative has recently launched a faceless ticketing system to issue e-challans for traffic violations.
The incident, occurring at one of the city’s busiest intersections near a high-security zone, has raised serious questions about the safety and monitoring mechanisms of Karachi’s much-publicized Safe City Project.
