Islamabad: Pakistan’s Senate has approved key amendment bills related to the Army, Air Force, Navy and the Practice and Procedure Act, marking a significant legislative development following the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The session, chaired by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, saw federal ministers Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Asif, and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry present the bills. The chamber passed the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Act, Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Act, Pakistan Navy (Amendment) Act, as well as the Practice and Procedure (Amendment) Bill by a majority vote.
Opposition members from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) strongly opposed the bills. Senators Humayun Mohmand and Kamran Murtaza called for the legislation to be referred to committee for further review. However, after seeking the opinion of the house, the chairman proceeded with voting, resulting in the bills’ approval.
Speaking during the session, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the amendments were necessary after the Senate passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which made corresponding changes to military service laws essential.
He added that revisions to the Army, Navy, and Air Force Acts were required to ensure consistency with the updated constitutional framework.
This legislative move is seen as part of a broader reform process within Pakistan’s legal and institutional structure, drawing attention from international observers monitoring defense and governance reforms in the country.
