PESHAWAR: Security forces in northwestern Pakistan conducted a major counter-terrorism operation in the bordering areas of Bannu and Lakki Marwat, killing five militants linked to an extremist outfit, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
According to officials, the district police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), acting on credible intelligence about militant presence in the Takhti Khel/Howaid border region, jointly launched a decisive operation with support from local residents.
The operation, led by Bannu DIG Sajjad Khan, resulted in a heavy exchange of fire, during which five militants were killed. Police officials reported that all security personnel remained unharmed throughout the engagement.
Authorities say the militants were part of a faction involved in recent unrest in the region, and the coordinated action is being described as a significant blow to their operational network.
Security forces have intensified operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent months amid an uptick in militant activity, particularly in districts bordering the former tribal areas.
