KYIV: Russia carried out one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months, launching 430 drones and 18 missiles on the capital Kyiv, killing eight people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian authorities confirmed on Thursday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks targeted residential areas, civilian infrastructure, and key energy facilities, causing widespread destruction. Ukrainian air-defence forces claimed to have intercepted a significant number of drones and missiles, though many still struck urban structures, leaving several buildings heavily damaged.
According to regional authorities, the barrage triggered fires and power outages across multiple districts of the capital as emergency teams scrambled to rescue trapped residents.
Arab media reported that the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Kyiv was also damaged in the strikes. The Azerbaijani government subsequently summoned the Russian ambassador to lodge a formal protest over the incident.
Meanwhile, Moscow warned NATO against deeper involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Russian officials stated that, in light of the ongoing drone and missile exchanges, any direct intervention by NATO “could lead to a Russia-NATO confrontation,” urging the alliance to “act with restraint.”
The latest escalation comes amid intensifying winter-season hostilities, raising renewed concerns over civilian safety, energy disruptions, and broader regional instability.
