LAHORE, PAKISTAN: The Punjab Housing Department has announced the launch of a major project to construct Groundwater Recharge Wells in Lahore, aimed at maintaining underground water levels and addressing urban flooding in metropolitan areas.
Under the special instructions of Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, three recharge wells have been activated in the Gulberg area, constructed by WASA Lahore at Liberty Chowk, Muratib Ali Road, and H-Block Park. According to the department spokesperson, the project has been designed to meet modern urban requirements, helping to replenish underground water reserves while mitigating long-standing flooding issues.
Each recharge well has a daily capacity of 8,000 gallons, and the design incorporates smart, environmentally friendly solutions based on technical assessments.
The project aligns with directives from Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, as part of broader environmental initiatives being implemented across the province. The Punjab Housing Authority (PHA) is identifying additional green belts for similar recharge wells, ensuring existing trees are preserved during construction.
The spokesperson added that under WASA Punjab, the project will eventually expand from Lahore to the entire province, supporting sustainable urban development and environmentally friendly infrastructure planning.
