LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to request federal support to initiate action against the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in other provinces, following an extensive review of the law-and-order situation chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
According to the provincial spokesperson, authorities have frozen assets worth Rs 23.40 billion linked to the banned organisation. In addition, 92 bank accounts and all associated digital accounts have been blocked, while cases have been registered against nine key financiers. Punjab has also filed 31 cases related to anti-state content circulated on social media.
During the meeting, officials briefed the chief minister on the province-wide registration campaign for mosques and prayer leaders. Over 61,000 forms were distributed, and more than 50,000 imams completed their registration, marking an 82% completion rate, which was met with satisfaction by the chief minister.
Five major wafaq-ul-madaris bodies have agreed to cooperate in the registration of mosques and clerics in an effort to reinforce peace and security. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz instructed authorities to ensure that imams are treated with respect throughout the process and are not subjected to unnecessary inconvenience.
She emphasised that prayer leaders play a vital role in society and should not be put in situations where they must seek donations to perform their duties.
