The National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC) has begun construction of a 220/132kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Gharo, Sindh, marking a major step toward strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. The groundbreaking ceremony was performed by NGC Deputy Managing Director (AD&M) Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto, along with Siemens Energy Managing Director Engr. Nadeem Ali Kazmi and KfW Country Director Mr. Sebastin Jacobi, at the project site in Thatta.
Designed to ensure the efficient and reliable transmission of electricity from wind power plants located across the Gharo wind corridor, the project is backed by a €27 million commitment from the German development bank KfW. The grid station is expected to be completed within 24 months.
Key components of the project include the installation of two 220/132kV, 250 MVA autotransformers, two 220kV line bays for connecting a double-circuit transmission line to the Jhimpir and Dhabeji grid stations, and four 132kV line bays dedicated to wind power plants within the Gharo cluster. The facility aims to enhance grid stability, improve voltage profiles and reduce transmission losses across the NGC and HESCO networks.
NGC Managing Director Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik appreciated the efforts of the Project Delivery South team for initiating the construction phase and advised them to maintain high-quality standards while meeting project deadlines.
Speaking at the ceremony, Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto highlighted the strategic importance of the Gharo Grid Station, noting that it will accelerate the growth of Pakistan’s renewable energy sector and strengthen the national transmission network. He urged contractors to adhere to the stipulated timelines.
Siemens Energy’s Managing Director Engr. Nadeem Ali Kazmi and KfW Country Director Mr. Sebastin Jacobi reaffirmed their organizations’ commitment to continued cooperation with NGC.
During the event, guests were presented with traditional Sindhi Ajrak, Topi and shields, and saplings were planted to mark the occasion. The ceremony was attended by GM PD (South) Engr. Muhammad Akram Dharejo, GM PD (North) Engr. Muhammad Shahid Nazir, GM AM (South) Engr. Muhammad Rafique, GM (Media & PR) Muhammad Ibrahim, Chief Engineers, NGC officers, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders.
