The United States is preparing to classify Venezuela’s “Cartel de los Soles” as a foreign terrorist organization, a move that would significantly expand Washington’s tools to pressure President Nicolás Maduro’s government.
US officials say the designation would enable broader sanctions, criminal charges, and international action against senior Venezuelan military and political figures alleged to be involved in large-scale drug trafficking.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas. Former President Donald Trump has previously stated that military action against Venezuela remains “on the table,” marking what could be the most dramatic escalation in the months-long US campaign against Maduro.
The US has already deployed additional naval assets to the Caribbean as part of an anti-narcotics mission, which American officials claim is aimed at countering drug flows allegedly facilitated by elements within the Venezuelan state apparatus.
Caracas has rejected the accusations as politically motivated, calling US actions an attempt to destabilise the country and force regime change.
