RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: In a development drawing international attention, Aleema Khan — sister of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan — was taken into temporary judicial custody on the orders of an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
The court was hearing a case involving 11 defendants linked to the November 26 protest, in which Aleema Khan is also nominated. During proceedings, Khan requested permission to leave, stating that her counsel was occupied at the Supreme Court. However, state prosecutor Zaheer Shah argued that under Section 351 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the defendant was already under the court’s custody.
As Aleema Khan stepped outside the courtroom, female police officers detained her and escorted her back inside, following the court’s directive that she must not exit the premises. Her lawyer, Faisal Malik, later arrived to represent her.
International observers note that the case adds to ongoing scrutiny of Pakistan’s politically sensitive prosecutions, especially those involving high-profile figures connected to former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The court has previously issued multiple arrest warrants for Aleema Khan in relation to the same protest case, signalling escalating legal pressure as proceedings continue.
