Geneva — The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has strongly criticised Pakistan’s proposed 27th constitutional amendment, warning that granting lifetime immunity to the President and the Field Marshal would severely undermine accountability and the rule of law.
In a statement shared through social media, Türk said that such immunity directly threatens judicial independence, democratic checks and balances, and the fundamental principles of human rights. He cautioned that the amendment could have “dangerous consequences for public access to justice” and weaken institutional safeguards meant to protect citizens’ rights.
Human rights observers note that the UN’s rare and pointed criticism highlights growing global concern over the direction of constitutional and governance reforms in Pakistan.
