LAHORE: In a landmark move to modernize one of Pakistan’s most iconic spiritual destinations, Secretary Auqaf and Religious Affairs, Dr. Ehsan Bhutta, chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of the Data Darbar Extension Project, which aims to equip the shrine with world-class facilities for the millions of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists who visit annually.
The initiative aligns with the Punjab Government’s broader vision to promote religious tourism while preserving cultural and spiritual heritage. Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed that the project incorporate modern amenities—such as upgraded washrooms, an expanded langar khana, enhanced accessibility features, and visitor-friendly infrastructure—while maintaining the shrine’s deep spiritual and historical significance.
The meeting was attended by Chairman LDA Mian Marghoob, DG LDA Tahir Farooq, Director Projects LDA, the Administrator Data Darbar, TEPA Chief Engineer Iqrar Ahmed, and NESPAK representatives. Dr. Bhutta emphasized that the project must be executed in carefully planned phases to ensure uninterrupted visitor flow and maximum convenience for all guests.
Special focus will be placed on improving the overall visitor experience—ranging from essential amenities and crowd management to organized facilities for langar distribution and other services.
Earlier, Dr. Bhutta conducted a detailed inspection of all six floors of the Auqaf Department, reviewing office cleanliness, prayer areas, the child care center, parking facilities, and the adjoining Shah Chiragh Mosque. He emphasized the need for speedy completion of all ongoing development projects to ensure timely public benefit.
Directing all related departments to maintain close coordination, Dr. Bhutta reiterated that the Data Darbar extension must meet high standards of design, functionality, and accessibility. He expressed confidence that these projects would transform Data Darbar into a modern, welcoming, and efficient spiritual complex—without compromising its historic identity—setting a benchmark for the development of religious and cultural sites across Punjab.
