Providence, Rhode Island:
A deadly shooting at the Ivy League Brown University during final examinations has left at least two people dead and eight others seriously injured, triggering panic across the campus.
According to US authorities, the incident occurred inside the seven-storey Barus and Holley building, which houses the university’s engineering and physics departments, while students were sitting their final exams.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos and fear. One student told local media that he hid under a desk for nearly two hours before police cleared the building.
Police said the suspect was a male dressed in black who opened indiscriminate fire and then fled the scene on foot. No weapon has yet been recovered, and a large-scale manhunt is underway to apprehend the attacker.
All injured victims were transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Hospital officials stated that six victims are in critical but stable condition, one remains in critical condition, while another is reported to be improving.
Following the attack, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for the university and surrounding areas. Police have urged residents to review doorbell and security camera footage and report any suspicious activity.
Reacting to the incident, President Donald Trump said the victims are in an extremely serious condition and that “there is nothing to do at this moment except pray.”
