LAHORE: The Ferozepur Road Industrial Association (FRIA) has called on the government to adopt domestic-driven policies aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s industrial competitiveness, warning that overreliance on external prescriptions could hinder innovation and growth.
FRIA Chairman Shahbaz Aslam emphasized that sustainable economic development requires a policy framework prioritizing efficiency, affordable energy, and incentives for research and technological adoption in the industrial sector.
While acknowledging the influence of global economic pressures and IMF recommendations on fiscal and monetary decisions, Shahbaz Aslam stressed the need for localized strategies that address the actual requirements of industry and agriculture. He noted that high borrowing costs, coupled with elevated energy tariffs, are raising production expenses and reducing the country’s ability to compete internationally. “Industries cannot thrive under uncertainty or high operational costs. We need policies that empower manufacturers to innovate, invest, and expand without being overburdened by financial and energy constraints,” he said.
The FRIA chairman highlighted that improving industrial efficiency and promoting technological adoption can mitigate the impact of rising energy prices and interest rates. He suggested targeted support for modern machinery, automation, and renewable energy adoption as ways to reduce production costs, improve product quality, and strengthen competitiveness in global markets.
Shahbaz Aslam also stressed the importance of developing reliable domestic financing mechanisms. Predictable access to credit, combined with incentives for modernization and energy efficiency, would allow small and medium enterprises to grow and contribute meaningfully to exports and employment. “Encouraging self-reliance in industry will reduce dependency on imports and create a resilient economy capable of weathering global shocks,” he added.
He concluded by urging policymakers to prioritize domestic capacity-building, smart fiscal reforms, and affordable energy policies. According to Shahbaz Aslam, these measures are critical to ensuring sustainable growth, job creation, and expansion of Pakistan’s industrial exports.
