LAHORE: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) organized a special ceremony on Tuesday to honor retired faculty members, celebrating their contributions to education and the university’s legacy.
The event was attended by Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, PUASA President Dr Amjad Abbas Magsi, Secretary Dr Muhammad Islam, Prof Dr Ghalib Atta, along with other office-bearers and faculty members.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali said, “Retired teachers are the pride of our institution. Retirement is part of the system, but a teacher’s service to knowledge and society should never truly retire. Just as lawyers, journalists, and artists continue contributing beyond formal retirement, teachers too should be provided opportunities to serve at the peak of their careers.”
He further emphasized that while the university may lose some of its assets with retirement, recognizing the valuable contributions of teachers remains essential. He appreciated PUASA for organizing a dignified and respectful ceremony in honor of the retired faculty.
Dr Amjad Abbas Magsi, PUASA President, paid tribute to the retired teachers, noting that earlier there was little tradition of honoring faculty in such a manner. “While differences may exist among colleagues, as an association we represent everyone. This ceremony is a small gesture to acknowledge teachers who have brought pride and recognition to Punjab University,” he said.
Vice Chancellor Promotes Peace and Inclusivity at Christmas Event
On the same day, Prof Dr Muhammad Ali addressed a Christmas cake-cutting ceremony organized by the Punjab University Administrative and Technical Staff Association and Christian employees at Faisal Auditorium. The event was attended by Principal Kinnaird College Prof Dr Iram Anjum, Registrar Dr Ahmad Islam, Senior Pastor Anwar Fazal, President of Employees Association Chaudhry Basharat Mahmood, and numerous university staff.
Extending Christmas and New Year greetings to Christian employees, the Vice Chancellor said, “We are all the same, and for peace and security in Pakistan, we must share in each other’s joys and sorrows. The university stands with the Christian community, acknowledging their immense contributions to the nation.”
Dr Iram Anjum praised Prof Dr Muhammad Ali’s leadership, saying, “To shine like stars on earth, we must fulfill our responsibilities to the best of our abilities.” Senior Pastor Anwar Fazal highlighted the importance of following the message of love, peace, and brotherhood taught by Hazrat Eesa (A.S), warning against exploiting others’ weaknesses in modern times.
Chaudhry Basharat Mahmood thanked the Vice Chancellor for his support in organizing the event, which concluded with Prof Dr Muhammad Ali and others cutting the Christmas cake.
