LAHORE: President of the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML) Punjab, Muhammad Sarwar Chaudhry, has termed the revelation of over Rs300 billion corruption in the Punjab government, as highlighted in the Auditor General of Pakistan’s audit report, a national tragedy.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, he said that the so-called development projects being launched on a daily basis were not intended to provide relief to the common people but were instead designed to serve the personal interests of those in power.
Muhammad Sarwar Chaudhry demanded strict accountability of the ruling authorities in light of the Auditor General’s findings and called for the recovery and return of the looted public money to the people of Punjab.
He said that the Auditor General of Pakistan’s audit report for the financial year has once again exposed massive financial irregularities, misuse of authority, and weak oversight within government departments, raising serious questions about governance and transparency.
The PMML Punjab president stated that rampant corruption has crippled public service delivery and eroded public trust in state institutions. He stressed that without across-the-board accountability and transparent investigations, corruption would continue to undermine the country’s economic stability.
He further urged accountability institutions and parliamentary oversight committees to take immediate notice of the audit report and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, regardless of their political affiliations.
Sarwar Chaudhry said that the people of Punjab are already facing inflation, unemployment, and deteriorating public services, and such large-scale corruption amounts to economic injustice against millions of citizens.
