LAHORE: At least 22 people were killed and 1,477 others injured in 1,223 road traffic crashes (RTCs) reported across Punjab during the past 24 hours, according to the Emergency Services Department (ESD).
Rescue teams responded to incidents in all 37 districts of the province. Of the injured, 662 sustained serious injuries and were shifted to various hospitals, while 815 victims with minor injuries were treated on the spot by Rescue Medical Teams, helping to ease the burden on healthcare facilities.
Official data shows that motorcycles were involved in the majority of crashes, accounting for 78 percent of all incidents. Authorities stressed that stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved lane discipline are essential to curb the rising number of road accidents.
The analysis further revealed that 741 drivers, including 48 underage drivers, 186 pedestrians, and 572 passengers were among those affected.
Lahore recorded the highest number of accidents, with 211 RTCs affecting 256 people. Multan followed with 87 crashes involving 94 victims, while Faisalabad ranked third with 84 crashes and 101 victims.
In total, 1,499 people were affected, including 1,190 men and 309 women. Age-wise data showed that 275 victims were under 18 years of age, 802 were between 18 and 40 years, and 422 were above 40.
The breakdown of vehicles involved includes 1,113 motorcycles, 87 auto-rickshaws, 191 cars, 41 vans, 17 passenger buses, 29 trucks, and 151 other vehicles, including slow-moving carts.
Authorities have reiterated the need for public awareness, responsible driving behavior, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
