LAHORE, Pakistan – The Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) is set to launch innovative research projects to promote natural and eco-friendly wastewater treatment across Punjab. The initiative, discussed in a meeting between MD PMDFC Syed Zahid Aziz and Prof. Dr. Aneela Anwar of UET Lahore, focuses on sustainable and low-cost methods to improve water quality.
Two pilot projects with a total budget of PKR 20 million are planned. The first project involves a Bacterial Dosing System designed to speed up the breakdown of organic pollutants in wastewater ponds, aiming for a 20 to 30 percent reduction in harmful levels (BOD and COD). The second project targets the Hadiara Drain, using advanced nanocomposite mats that use natural sunlight to degrade industrial pollutants like dyes and phenols.
Syed Zahid Aziz highlighted the importance of academic collaboration and nature-based solutions for climate-resilient urban infrastructure. To ensure the success and scalability of these projects, PMDFC plans to approach UNICEF for funding support, citing the organization’s strong track record in backing environmental initiatives. Prof. Dr. Aneela Anwar reaffirmed UET’s commitment to providing the scientific expertise and laboratory support needed to turn these research projects into practical solutions for Punjab’s water challenges.
