LAHORE: At least 10 people were killed and 1,169 others injured in 1,039 road traffic crashes reported across Punjab over the past 24 hours, according to the Emergency Services Department (ESD).
In a statement, the ESD said Rescue 1122 teams responded to accidents in all 37 districts of the province. Of the injured, 489 sustained serious injuries and were shifted to hospitals, while 680 victims with minor injuries were treated on the spot, easing the burden on healthcare facilities.
The data showed that motorcycles were involved in the majority of crashes, accounting for 71 percent of all incidents. Authorities said the trend highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved lane discipline and enhanced road safety awareness.
According to the ESD’s analysis, the victims included 654 drivers, 36 underage drivers, 126 pedestrians and 399 passengers.
Lahore recorded the highest number of road traffic crashes, with 184 incidents affecting 204 people. Gujranwala ranked second with 63 crashes and 67 victims, followed by Faisalabad with 61 crashes resulting in 76 injuries.
Overall, 1,179 victims were affected, including 936 males and 243 females. Age-wise data showed that 224 victims were under 18 years of age, 614 were between 18 and 40, while 341 were above 40.
The report further revealed that 1,044 motorcycles, 91 auto-rickshaws, 170 cars, 22 vans, eight passenger buses, 24 trucks and 115 other vehicles, including slow-moving carts, were involved in the accidents.
Rescue officials reiterated the need for improved road safety measures, responsible driving practices and stricter action against traffic violations to reduce the growing number of road crashes in the province.
