LAHORE: The Punjab government is set to launch a digital dashboard for a comprehensive census of manhole covers across the province, as part of a broader crackdown on the growing menace of manhole cover theft.
A high-level meeting, held on the directives of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, reviewed measures to ensure strict and effective action against organised groups involved in the theft of manhole covers. The meeting was chaired by Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, with Parliamentary Secretary Barrister Sultan Bajwa also in attendance.
Officials discussed the formulation of tougher laws to curb the rising number of theft incidents, agreeing on the need for a comprehensive strategy and decisive action to bring those responsible to justice. It was decided that Deputy Commissioners in all districts will oversee the numbering and traceability of manhole covers, a move aimed at improving accountability and monitoring.
According to a spokesperson for the Housing Department, a dedicated digital dashboard is being developed on the chief minister’s instructions. The platform will consolidate complete, province-wide data on manhole covers to enable real-time monitoring and effective supervision.
The meeting also considered legislative proposals to introduce stringent penalties and heavy fines for individuals involved in manhole cover theft. Authorities agreed to mobilise the Para Force and district administrations to strengthen enforcement efforts.
In addition, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has been directed to immediately report any theft incidents to the Para Force and the Special Branch. The Special Branch will also be engaged to carry out a comprehensive investigation into organised theft networks.
Reiterating the government’s stance, the Housing Department spokesperson said a zero-tolerance policy would be enforced against manhole cover theft, stressing that no compromise would be made on public safety and the protection of life and property.
