LAHORE: At least 20 people were killed and 1,191 injured in 1,019 road traffic crashes (RTCs) reported across Punjab during the past 24 hours, according to the Emergency Services Department (ESD).
Rescue teams responded to incidents in all 37 districts of the province. Of the injured, 491 sustained serious injuries and were shifted to various hospitals, while 700 people with minor injuries were treated at the scene by Rescue Medical Teams, easing pressure on healthcare facilities.
Motorbikes accounted for the majority of crashes, with 74 percent of incidents involving two-wheelers. Authorities stressed that stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved lane discipline are critical to curbing the rising number of road accidents.
An analysis of the data showed that the victims included 669 drivers, 42 underage drivers, 150 pedestrians, and 392 passengers. Lahore topped the list with 214 crashes affecting 252 people, followed by Faisalabad with 78 crashes and 98 victims. Multan ranked third, reporting 59 crashes that injured 62 people.
Further details revealed that a total of 1,211 victims were affected, including 969 males and 242 females. By age group, 204 victims were under 18 years, 683 were between 18 and 40 years, while 324 were above 40 years of age.
The data also showed that 1,033 motorbikes, 68 auto-rickshaws, 129 cars, 25 vans, 14 passenger buses, 35 trucks, and 96 other vehicles, including slow-moving carts, were involved in the reported crashes.
