Islamabad:
A significant development emerged on Friday as Pakistan’s Senate took up the issue of restricting social media use by children under the age of 18, reflecting growing concerns over online safety and parental anxiety.
During the Senate session, a call was made to impose a ban on minors’ use of social media platforms, including TikTok. The matter was subsequently referred to the relevant standing committee for further review and recommendations.
The motion was raised by Senator Falak Naz, who highlighted that the unchecked use of social media by underage children had become a serious concern for parents. She stressed the need for regulatory measures to protect minors from potential online harms.
The committee is expected to examine the legal, social and technological implications of such a restriction before submitting its findings to the Senate.
