KHARAN, Pakistan — Pakistani security forces killed 12 militants following coordinated attacks on two banks and a police station in Kharan district of southwestern Balochistan province, the military said Thursday.
Between 15 and 20 Indian-backed terrorists from the group Fitna al-Hindustan stormed the city police station and two commercial banks, making off with 3.4 million Pakistani rupees (approximately $12,000), according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing.
Security forces launched an immediate counteroffensive, engaging the attackers in three separate firefights during clearance operations. All 12 militants were killed in the encounters, ISPR confirmed.
The militants’ attempt to take hostages at the police station was foiled by the swift response of security personnel. Search operations are ongoing in the surrounding area to locate any remaining militants.
Pakistan has long accused India of supporting separatist and militant groups in resource-rich Balochistan, allegations New Delhi denies. The province has experienced decades of insurgency with armed groups demanding greater autonomy and control over natural resources.
