LAHORE – The Pakistan Super League (PSL) Governing Council’s Working Committee has approved a groundbreaking change in the player selection mechanism for PSL 11, introducing a full players auction system for the first time in the league’s history.
According to media reports, the decision was made following extensive deliberations on auction, draft, and retention matters, aimed at making the league more competitive and transparent.
The PSL Governing Council Working Committee meeting, held late at night, finalized the player retention policy for PSL 11. The decisions will require final approval from PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, with the possibility of convening a full Governing Council meeting if necessary.
Media reports citing sources revealed that defending champions Lahore Qalandars voted in favor of the players auction. Quetta Gladiators, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and the Hyderabad franchise also supported the auction system. However, Peshawar Zalmi and the Sialkot franchise advocated for a draft auction. The majority decision favored adopting the players auction system.
The five existing franchises agreed to retain four players each, with one player receiving brand ambassador status. The retention formula allows franchises to retain one player from each category, while one player can be designated as a brand ambassador in a lower category. This arrangement enables franchises to maintain continuity with their prominent and popular players.
The newly joining franchises will select players from the remaining player pool following the same pattern. Reports indicate that two new franchises have insisted on zero retention, under which all players would be included in the auction pool, allowing franchises to build their teams freely through the auction. This measure aims to provide equal opportunities to new teams.
According to media reports, the complete formula regarding PSL auction and retention will be submitted to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, with an official announcement expected within the next one or two days.
Cricket circles are calling this decision a significant development in PSL history, with expectations of further improvement in the league’s structure and competitive standards. This development marks PSL’s alignment with international T20 league formats, particularly the Indian Premier League’s auction model, promising enhanced excitement and fair competition in Pakistan’s premier cricket tournament.
