Karachi: The death toll from the devastating fire at Gul Plaza on MA Jinnah Road has climbed to 26, while 73 people remain missing, according to the Sindh government.
Officials at the Sindh government’s helpline desk said that initially 70 missing persons were reported, with three more names added later, bringing the total number of missing individuals to 73. The official list includes several women.
Rescue authorities stated that the fire has largely been brought under control, and cooling operations are currently underway. Search and rescue teams continue efforts to locate missing persons inside the damaged building.
Incident Details
The fire broke out at Gul Plaza late Saturday night at around 10:15 pm on the ground floor and rapidly spread to the third floor, causing severe damage. Due to the intensity of the blaze, several parts of the building collapsed.
Relatives of those trapped remained outside the burning building for hours, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
Firefighters managed to completely extinguish the fire after 33 hours of continuous efforts. Following this, rescue teams entered the plaza and conducted a limited search operation in the burned shops. During the operation, remains of three individuals, including a child, were recovered and shifted to the Civil Hospital Trauma Centre.
Authorities have confirmed that at least 26 people have lost their lives in the Gul Plaza tragedy so far, while rescue operations continue.
