Islamabad – In a significant diplomatic engagement, Danish Ambassador to Pakistan Maja Mortensen met with Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik on Monday to discuss enhanced cooperation in climate action and scientific collaboration.
The high-level meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters focused on advancing science diplomacy amid the evolving global political landscape and addressing shared environmental challenges.
Dr. Malik emphasized the stark disparities in climate responsibility, noting that the Global South bears a disproportionate burden of climate impacts despite minimal contribution to emissions. “Nearly 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions originate from just ten countries, which also receive approximately 85 percent of global green financing,” the Minister stated, highlighting systemic inequities in climate finance distribution.
The Federal Minister commended Denmark and other Nordic nations for their robust social welfare systems and progressive environmental policies, describing them as models for sustainable development.
In a major announcement, Dr. Malik briefed Ambassador Mortensen on Pakistan’s ambitious plans to establish a Green University dedicated to environmental sciences and climate research. The proposed institution aims to facilitate joint research initiatives and establish student and faculty exchange programs with leading international universities.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, with particular emphasis on collaborative climate action and advancing science diplomacy in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. The meeting underscored the growing importance of international partnerships in addressing the climate crisis and fostering sustainable development.
