Lahore: Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, attended the International Customs Day 2026 ceremony held at Customs Public School as the special guest, where he underscored the importance of business facilitation alongside effective and transparent enforcement.
Addressing the ceremony, the Speaker said that the role of Customs is both continuous and challenging, but sustainable business growth can only be achieved when enforcement is efficient, transparent, and facilitation-oriented. He emphasized that trade flourishes when legitimate businesses are supported, adding that Pakistan aims to convey a clear message to the international community that it is open and ready for business.
Commending the ongoing reforms within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan appreciated the government’s efforts to strengthen the revenue system while providing relief and facilities to the public and business community. He stated that it is the responsibility of state institutions to fully facilitate those engaged in lawful trade.
Referring to Pakistan’s recent economic trajectory, the Speaker noted that while the country’s financial affairs have long been perceived as entangled with international financial institutions, significant progress is now being made toward economic improvement and stability.
He stressed that Customs enforcement must take strict action against illicit arms smuggling and illegal currency movements, while creating a supportive environment for law-abiding traders. Highlighting the role of trade as a backbone of the modern economy, he said that ease of doing business is no longer optional and that traders must have clarity regarding enforcement policies at ports and entry points.
The Speaker identified improvement in facilitation and promotion of business as the two major challenges ahead, adding that those who violate the law should remain apprehensive of strict enforcement measures.
Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan also appreciated the presentations made by customs officers during the event, stating that their ideas encouraged fresh thinking. He reiterated that economic strength and business growth are only possible through convenience, facilitation, and fair enforcement.
